Jim and Lisa react to the recent testimony at a Senate hearing where USA gymnasts Simone Biles, Mckayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Maggie Nichols, vividly and emotionally recounted not only the sexual abuse they suffered at the hands of Larry Nassar, but also the failure of the FBI to investigate their repeated reports of his behavior.
We continue our interview with Amy Over, who survived the Columbine High School attack and whose podcast “Confronting: Columbine” digs much deeper into the catastrophic repercussions from that day, the aftermath and legacy including setting a blueprint for future shooters and copycats.

They both recount their experiences that day and in the chaotic days afterward. Jim talks about his new podcast on Audible, called “After The Fall” which sheds new light on the events leading up to the horrific terrorist attack.

Amy Over was a high school senior at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado in 1999. She was on the Girls’ Basketball Team and her mentor was Coach Dave Sanders. She was in the school cafeteria on April 20th when two armed students entered and started shooting. Amy found herself hiding under a table and then running for her life. At the end of their rampage, her coach and twelve other students were dead…and hundreds of lives were never the same again. We interview Amy, who’s podcast Confronting: Columbine reflects upon the over twenty years since the Columbine High School tragedy. In her podcast, she asks many hard questions about what really happened that day …. and the days and years that followed. The grief for the murdered victims lives on… as does the trauma for the survivors.

We continue our interview with Dublin police Sergeant, Misty Carausu who was key in getting Denise and Aaron cleared of any potential charges and bringing the true offender to justice. Misty takes us step by step on her relentless search for more information on MM, based on her instinct that he had been involved in other crimes. She talks about her numerous calls to other police departments, calls to the FBI, follow ups on other similar cases and complaints, collecting all kinds of evidence — yet many times her efforts were brushed off by the very people who should have been welcoming her leads. Laura and Jim share with Misty their theories about the primary motivation in the case.

Join Laura each week in the intelligence cell as she behaviourally breaks down each attack and highlights which cases she believes to be linked, why PS did what he did and how he was allowed to get away with it for so long. www.crime-analyst.com

A big Halloween party at an apartment complex in Redmond, Washington. Themed rooms and costumed partygoers. But by the end of the party, one of the hosts is dead. The police look to the partiers as the prime suspects: was it the guy in the devil mask, the bank robber, the construction worker? As investigators comb through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even consult with a psychic, they zero in on one suspect in particular. But for what reason? Host and reporter Matthew Shaer (Over My Dead Body) returns to the scene of the crime, speaks with everyone about a night that still haunts them years later. It’s a series about race and policing, mislaid justice, cutting-edge science, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day — choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse.
Listen to SUSPECT: wondery.fm/Suspect_CrimeProfile
We interview former Sergeant Misty Carausu of the Dublin Police Department, who became instrumental in connecting the dots in Denise and Aaron’s case. While investigating a home robbery, assault and attempted kidnapping of a family in Dublin, California (40 miles away from Vallejo) , Sergeant Carausu became concerned that the suspect they had in custody for that crime might have committed other home invasions. One seemingly small clue that she noticed — a strand of blonde hair stuck to a pair of blacked out goggles — led her on a dogged search for more victims. Misty talks about searching the offender’s home in South Lake Tahoe and paraphernalia that she found which led her to ask more questions about other potentially linked crimes.

Investigative reporter and co-author of the book “Victim F”, Nicole Weisensee Egan deep dives into the tactics used against Aaron when he was interrogated by police. Jim and Laura are shocked that the detective who handled this case so badly actually received the “Law Enforcement Officer of the Year” Award that year. Jim weighs in with what he thinks was going on with the initial police investigation. Laura reads a reprehensible quote that Detective Matt Mustard said to Denise’s mother and also points out that the misogynistic attitudes evidenced by some in the Vallejo police should disqualify them from dealing with vulnerable victims.
